I have begun to notice a trend developing with the construction world that is very discouraging. That is, more and more companies are needing/wanting/demanding, that workers work on Saturdays.

Im not sure when Saturday became a work day.

In the world that we live in where there is already no time in a day to eat right, exercise, spend time with your family. Now we are cutting our free time, our "weekend" in half. Why? Is it because of the pressures of the construction industry? The need for the superiors to get that all so important bonus at the end of the job? The bonus none of the workers that worked all those Saturdays away from their families ever see a cent of. The answer to that I am not sure of, but  whatever the reason, I don't like it, and here is why.

I know some companies now that will only hire based on if someone is willing to work Saturdays. Not as a request to work the occasional Saturday, but it is mandatory upon hiring that you will be working every Saturday. Don't forget this isn't part time work either, this is working a Saturday after a 40-44 hour work week already. I have also been looked down upon by my supervisors for making myself not available to work Saturdays. They deem you as "not a hard worker" or "someone who doesn't like to make money." Both of which are completely not true. My view is that we spend up to 40 hours a week with the people that we work with, much more time than with our families. So whatever time I have to spend with my friends and family, I'm taking. What does working on Saturday get you? Some extra money in your pocket, sure, but what about all the time your missing out on. Things that aren't always going to be there? Work will always be there on Monday. Your kids first step, their first words, having drinks with a friend, sleeping in on Saturday morning. Those won't always be there. Each Saturday you work, you miss a small piece of that. What are those moments worth to you?

Now I know that there are people who like to have that option and work on Saturdays, money motivates them. That is totally fine. However, there is something to be said about only having one day off during the week. It just isn't enough time to recharge the batteries. One day simply isn't enough time to get everything done. Think about what that is doing to your body, your motivation. Its more than draining to be pouring that much effort and commitment to a job. You slowing are burning yourself out.

I guess what Im getting at in this blog is that I don't want myself or anyone else to spend all their lives working, when we can be utilizing our weekend for what we enjoy doing. That thing that makes us forget about work. The thing that makes us put up with work so that on the weekend we can live. Don't waste all of your life working on Saturdays. Don't be someone who looks back on their life and wish that they had spent their weekends living rather than working.
