Construction work is dangerous, there is no doubt that its one of the most dangerous jobs that exist today. The numbers don’t lie: The most dangerous jobs you can work in North America – or anywhere else in the world, for that matter – are found within the construction industry. This is why there is such a high demand for construction site safety. In fact its regulated by government and is a mandatory requirement to do business in North America.

Working in construction can be really hard. Unfortunately, it’s no secret that the construction industry experiences more workplace injuries at work per year than any other industry. According to the 2016 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index this is leading to a massive problem of lost productivity due to occupational injury in construction.

“Aside from the harm to the worker, workplace injuries also impose an economic burden on employers. Costs attributed to workers’ compensation claims, which cover the injured worker’s medical costs, most directly correlate with occupational accidents. However, indirect costs required to train and compensate a replacement worker, repair damaged property, investigate the accident, implement corrective action, and maintain insurance coverage, as well as those attributed to schedule delays, added administrative time, lower morale, increased absenteeism, and poorer customer relations can amount to over 4.5x the direct costs. In the U.S. alone, nonfatal workplace injuries cost employers a total of nearly $62 billion every year in direct costs.”

This problem can easily be solved with construction site safety and proper enforcement. If you look at our case study you will find that by simply enforcing safety and ensuring that inspections get completed on time a company can drastically reduce their incidents.

Just looking at what construction workers are exposed to its no doubt that construction site safety is a very important element of a construction site. For example, Working at heights on incomplete structures, ground workers exposed to falling objects, open excavation, raw material moving in and out of the areas, no structured power lines installed so cabling is drawn out, constant moving equipment, no staircases installed so ladders and scaffolding is used, and this is just to name a few! This is why hazard assessments, fall protection plans, and near miss reporting is so important. Not only is it important to be completed, for compliance purposes, but its more important to be completed on time. The reason for this is to ensure safety has been thought about before workers start to work. Without completing safety forms before starting work, workers fall into complacency where they get to comfortable working in a hazardous environment and construction site safety doesn't seem as important. Reviewing hazards and controls before starting work allows the workers to reflect on the fact that everything around them injure them, or worse, cause a fatality if not properly controlled.

So how do you ensure that your workers are completing construction site safety forms on time? You could hire full time safety personal. You'd need about one full time person for every 30 field workers, employed and contracted. Or you could harness the SafetyTek platform!

Using SafetyTek, a safety enforcement platform, we find that we can enforce your safety for 1/10th the cost it would normally take to hire a full time safety enforcement team.
